About The God Mic

The disembodied voice from the back of the house. Uncompromising criticism of theatre, opera, and dance.

The "god mic" is the backstage announcement system — the disembodied voice that says "the house is open" and "places please." It comes from everywhere and nowhere. It has no patience for sentiment.

That's the editorial stance. We publish serious criticism. Reviews that engage with the work at the level the work deserves — whether that means a paragraph or three thousand words. We don't give stars. We use a seven-point scale because most shows fall somewhere in the middle and the middle matters.

Coverage: Theatre (plays and musicals), opera, dance. Primarily Las Vegas and New York, with attention to productions worth documenting wherever they happen.

What we don't do: Promotional coverage. Season previews that read like press releases. Sycophantic blurbs. If a show earns praise it gets praise. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

Avoid (2/7)A failure with reasons. Skip it.
Walk Out (1/7)Reserved for productions that insult the audience's intelligence or time.
